Kris Allen has had a busy year and a half. After defeating Adam Lambert on American Idol , the aspiring star went right into the studio to lay tracks for his debut album. The first single from his self-titled album, “Live Like We’re Dying,” was deemed was deemed a success and Allen proved himself as an artist.

The second single, “The Truth” was released in November 2009 . For the music video, the pop superstar traveled to the desert with a piano, an old dusty chest, a lumpy mattress and his buddy and lead singer of Train, Pat Monahan.

Ping-ponging across the country while on tour, PopStar caught up with Allen, who was in transit to a new venue where we can only imagine a plethora of screaming fans awaited him. In our exclusive interview, we talked to the star about life on the road, filming the music video for “The Truth” and his plans to record a second album.

Hey, Kris! You’ve been out on the road touring all summer, so can you tell us how things are going?
It’s really good. We’ve been out since forever, so it’s almost like this is the way life is for now. We are really used to it and I think things are going really well.

Practically every day, you and the Kris Allen Band are in a new city playing a new venue. Are you enjoying yourself?
I like traveling, going to different places every day and getting to see the country is pretty cool. The nice thing about going on the road is that every show is different, so that is always fun and the bus is always entertaining. The things I don’t like are the usual, like not being able to hang out with family and friends. It’s been really good so far.

In your new music video “The Truth” you tweeted about doing your own stunts. Can you tell us about that?
It was really fun. The only thing I did was fall off the piano onto some mattresses; it wasn’t the softest mattresses either. They worked!

So how many takes did you have to do?
I had to do it twice, so it wasn’t that horrible. But, it was a long fall! You would think that falling off a piano isn’t that far, but it’s pretty far.

When you were filming the video, we hear that production was put on pause while a rough storm rode through the desert.
The first day we had some pretty nasty weather, but it was actually a really cool storm. When we got up there the second day, we knocked it out.

When everyone was mapping out ideas for the music video, did You Get involved?
Yeah. I think it was a collaboration of me, the director and some people from management and label. We were trying to find a way for it not to be about me and Pat [Monahan] singing to each other, which could have been really awkward. So I think we figured out a really cool way to do that.

What happens when you finish on the road?
Get back home and start working on the next album.

Do you have a message for your fans?
I really have the best fans in the world, they know a lot and they are very involved. You can’t do this without those guys, so thank you!

Kris Allen says that when he won Season 8 of “American Idol” over perceived-favorite Adam Lambert in 2009, he wasn’t guaranteed a career.

So don’t feel bad for the 25-year-old former Arkansas church music director that he’s spending much of his first solo summer tour opening for big names such as Keith Urban, Maroon 5 or Barenaked Ladies.

Not that Allen hasn’t had success of his own. His self-titled debut album hit No. 11 on Billboard’s albums chart, and its debut single, “Live Like We’re Dying,’ hit the Top 10 on the Adult Contemporary chart. The disc has sold more than 300,000 copies.

In a recent phone call from Miami, where he was opening for Maroon 5, Allen discussed his career so far, as well as his future.

LEHIGH VALLEY MUSIC: Hey Kris, how’s it going?

ALLEN: “It’s going good, man.”

Let me talk a little bit about what you’re doing this summer. You’re playing some solo dates, but you’re also opening for Maroon 5 and Keith Urban and Barenaked Ladies.

“Yup, I think that’s it, man.”

What is that like? What kind of experience is that – opening up for established acts like that?

“You know, it’s cool to do the solo shows because you get to play a long set and kind of get really into it. But to open for these people is really great, man. We’ve learned so much, I’ve learned so much. And just being out on the road, talking to these people, watching their shows, seeing how they do things – it’s entertaining and informational and all of that stuff. It’s really cool.”

It’s interesting the mix of musical genres there: You’ve got Barenaked Ladies are hard to classify, I guess, but Keith Urban is the country pop and Maroon 5 is more straightforward pop. How are the different audiences reacting to you?

“You know, it’s different with all of them, obviously. The Barenaked Ladies shows, there’s more an older crowd there – The Barenaked Ladies have been around awhile. But I think we’ve had people come up to us and say, ‘You know what? I did not know who you guys were, but I’m a fan now. You guys are great. And the Maroon 5 stuff is some younger people, some older people, so that’s cool. I’ve only done one with those people. I think the country crowds are great because they’re really into it. They’re just happy to see Keith Urban and so our job is just to get up there and to get them psyched for the show. And I think are really like digging the music when we play those shows, too.”

We’ve got you opening for Keith Urban here, and the fair has a grandstand that holds like 10,000 people and you guys are approaching a sellout, so you guys are going to have a really good crowd here.

“Awesome.”

And Pennsylvania isn’t necessarily a hotbed for country, but the fairs, the country fans come out to it and country acts really do well here.

“Awesome, man.”

Before we get off the subject, I want to talk about the fact that you won “American Idol” and yet you’re doing some opening acts. I’m going to contrast that, if I could, to Adam Lambert, who’s doing smaller venues, but strictly headlining shows. Was there any discussion that you were aware of? How is it decided that you do the shows with the bigger artists?

“Well, we did a headlining thing in June; we headlined for about a month, which was really cool. But for the rest of the summer we have been opening. And, you know, I think what ‘American Idol’ does is gives you the opportunity to have a music career. And most music careers start with opening for other bands. And, I mean, Maroon 5 was opening for people six, seven years ago. And so, hopefully, we’ll get to the point where we can do all headlining stuff. But for us, man, we are so excited to get to do the shows that we are doing and getting to meet the people that we meet. And I think it’s good for us to open, ‘cause we are learning so much and I think it’s part of the process. And I think we’re happy to go through that process.”

Cool. I saw that the video for “The Truth” is out now. What was the thought process behind making that your second single?

“You know what? It was a conversation with myself, management and the label, and we all just thought that, hopefully, this song would connect with people lyrically and emotionally more than some things from the album. So we thought it would be a good thing to do. And so that’s kind how that happened.”

I have to admit that “Live Like You’re Dying” and then this both have sort of that very accessible sound – they’re both songs that people can hear and get into.

“Yeah. I think people can relate to it. So I think it’s cool.”

I did see that on your website there was some discussion about the fact that single that was released to radio added Pat Monahan on it. Can you talk about that at all?

“Right. Yeah, I mean, it was a decision by the label. To be completely honest, they thought that because Pat wrote the song, they thought it would have a little bit more of an emotional feel to it. And no one can really deny how well Train is doing now, so, I mean, I think that was all part of it, too.”

Yeah, I gotta admit, that was a total surprise to me. I mean, I love Train’s earlier stuff, but the fact that they came back so strong with “Soul Sister,” that was just amazing to me.

“Yeah, we’ve done a few shows together, and sometimes I just want to run up to him and be like, [in a high voice] ‘Hey, soul sister.’ It’s funny.”

A couple of more questions about your debut disc. You got to write with some incredible people. Jon Foreman from Switchfoot. And I read somewhere you wrote a song, or were writing, with Mat Kearney.

“Um-Hmm. We ended up writing a song together. It just didn’t end up on the album.”

Talk a little bit about the experience of getting to write with some really talented people.

“It was a little intimidating, to be honest. Growing up listening to those people and being a fan of them, you almost think … for me, it was, not that I don’t have any self-confidence, but it was going in there and like these guys have been doing their thing for a long time and obviously doing it really well. So it’s almost like you want to just give them the reins – like ‘Here, do something with it.’ [Laughs] But the funny thing was they were like, ‘You know what? We want you to help, Kris. We want you to help out on this and be a part of it. This is your music and we just want to be here to help.’ That was their role. So it was kind of a weird thing for me to get involved in that stuff, but you have to switch your mind and think, ‘This is my music, and I want it to be like this.’ It was cool to get their feedback on a lot of stuff, though.”

Speaking of that, are you writing for a second disc yet, or is it too early?

“I’m writing in my free time that I have. Definitely writing songs. But we’re not in the studio at all and we’ve been on the road pretty nonstop since the end of May. And so there’s no time to get that done. But hopefully we can get back in the studio sometime soon and get started on a second album.”

Do you think about what the process will be like? I know that, as with every ‘American Idol’ contestant who records an album, the first album comes together pretty quickly. Have you thought about what the process for the second one would be like? I mean, obviously, you take more time.

“Yeah, I mean, we talked about it with people and we want it to be different. We want it to be something that does take awhile – not awhile, but enough time to where you can get it exactly right and feel incredible about it, and make sure the right songs are on there and working with the right producer and being in the right studio. You just want it to all feel right, you know? And so that’s definitely the process that we’re trying to take with it and take our time to make sure that whatever we put out is not just thrown together; that it’s really thought out and that it’s perfect, you know? You want it to be perfect.”

I saw that the “Idol Gives Back’ episode that you did has raised over a quarter-million dollars now. How did the decision come about that you took the trip?

“The day there was that huge telethon for Haiti, and I was supposed to be answering phones or something like that for that. And the day I was supposed to do that, I was in the 19 [Entertainment, his management] office and Simon Fuller comes up to me and says, ‘You know what? Would you want to go to Haiti?’ And, I mean, you can’t say no to that! So we planned the trip, and it just happened, and we put it together with ‘Idol Gives Back.’ And I thought it was really one of the coolest things I’ve gotten to do.”

The results have been pretty significant, too. You don’t sneeze at a quarter million dollars.

“Yeah.”

The post-‘Idol’ world that you’re in now. Is it everything you imagined?

“Oh, man, I mean, I get to ride a lot of roller coasters. You know what, man? I really didn’t have too many expectations for what was going to happen after the show. Because it could go a lot of different ways. And for me, I think it’s happened kind of perfectly. I’ve gotten to meet pretty much a lot of different people. I mean, I went to a Paul McCartney show the other day. And, I mean, I’m a huge Beatles fan. And so getting to be able to do stuff like that, we’re in the fifth row. Getting to play with the people. I mean, never mind Keith Urban. He’s an amazing, amazing artist and getting to know him, not just listen to him or play with him, I mean, getting to know him and he’s a really nice guy. I would say my life is pretty crazy right now. I can’t complain about anything.”

Do comparisons with Adam Lambert at this point, more than a year later, does that bother you at all?

“For people that compare me and Adam, I think it’s almost – I don’t want to say stupid, because that’s not the right word. But it’s a little crazy to me that people would even – even on the show that they would compare us. There’s no comparison between me and him. Our music is very different. We are very different. I mean, obviously, we’re really good friends. But we’re just so different from each other, there’s no point in comparing us, because you’re not going to come to any kind of conclusion there.”

Your family life – you were a lone couple when you entered into this. How has that affected your station as far as where you guys are in your life plans?

“My wife has wanted me to play music for all of our relationship. And so, she’s excited that I’m getting to do what I’m doing. Obviously it’s not easy being away from her all the time. But she does get to come out on the road, and that’s always fun. And we still have our life back home in Arkansas, and that’s just changing things. But obviously we’re really happy with the way things are. And we get about three weeks off here in a little bit. So that’ll be nice.”

For the last few months, Kris Allen has been on the road.

Touring with FallFest performers Maroon 5 and VV Brown, Allen has been learning the tricks of the trade.

“As a band we’ve learned a ton being on the road, and we’ve had fun doing it,” Allen said. “Maroon 5 puts on an incredible show, and we’ve learned a lot from them. They’ve been around for a while, and they’re great artists, and they’ve inspired us to do the same.”

West Virginia University is the first college campus Allen has performed at, and prior to the show said he was excited to experience what he heard was “one big party.”

Winner of the eighth season of “American Idol,” Allen overcame competitor Adam Lambert and released a successful album within the same year, featuring his well received acoustic rendition of Kanye West’s “Heartless” and current radio hit “Live Like We’re Dying.”

Allen’s main goal is to give his audience as great of a time as he and his band have on stage.

“I’m a huge fan of having fun, and that’s really what needs to come across to my audience. We like to get the crowd involved as much as we can and like to see you just dance and have a good time – that’s what it’s all about for us,” Allen said. “We just want everyone to enjoy our show and help give students a good time on the first day of school. We’re happy to entertain them.”

Allen discussed his new album, taking most pride in the track “Red Guitar,” which he wrote himself, and his appreciation of his success but admitted rushing into the process of compiling an album.

“I’m so happy I even got the chance to make a first album,” Allen said. “Everyone wants to make that first album perfect, and I feel like I may not have taken enough time to work on my first, so now I plan to take more time on the next album and hope for a perfected, raw sound.”

While his road to success may be different than other artists in the industry, having gained fame from being a contestant on “American Idol,” Allen said the work has been just as hard as others.

“The ‘Idol’ experience definitely made me more humble, but for me it’s been a lot of hard work just like for most artists. But it’s definitely not the easy route like some people seem to think,” he said. ” I’ve worked my tail off for this every day, and I appreciate everything I’ve been able to accomplish.”
