More than 50 million Americans suffer from some type of allergies. They’re the 6th leading cause of chronic illness and cost over $18 billion a year to treat. It may seem as though spring or summer are the main seasons for allergies since there are higher volumes of spores and ragweed. But the truth is, allergies can develop or display symptoms at any time and during any season. Fall, however, can be an especially difficult time for allergy sufferers due in large part to the weather changes. Dealing with cool to scorching temperatures mixed with rain and even snow on any given day is one sure way to confuse nature and cause various plants and contaminants to release in defense mode or just as a forced response. The first thought may be to escape to your home and shut everything out. But allergens can come in with you regardless of whether they’re invited. Fortunately, there are a few simple tips to help minimize the impact of fall allergy season and keep the allergies out of your home.

Ditch the Ragweed

Ragweed is a wild plant or weed with yellow flowers that blossom in August. The flowers of a single ragweed plant can contain up to 1 billion grains of pollen annually. While the plant can’t survive through the first frost, it can linger and spread its spores well into the fall. The plant can be found nationwide and at least 75% of people who deal with springtime allergies are affected by ragweed. Since it travels easily on fabric and shoes, it’s essential to rid your home of the menace to avoid year-long pollen sensitivity issues.

Banish the Dust Bunnies

Dust mites are microscopic parasites that live off of dead skin cells and hair of humans and animals. Almost 100,000 dust mites live in a square yard of carpet. The mites aren’t what directly cause the allergies. But a 1,000 dust mites can produce 250,000 waste pellets (yes, mite poop), and that is what most people are allergic to. That puts a whole new spin on it, doesn’t it? Vacuuming at least weekly and preferably several times a week helps. But it’s not enough to get everything up. Deciding to professionally clean your carpet, however, can make all the difference and significantly reduce the intruders and their filth once and for all.

Eliminate the Mold and Mildew

The scent of mildew is undeniable, and it’s often thought of as a harmless and unavoidable part of a household. However, it’s caused by dampness and creates spores just like mold. Moreover, it almost always precedes or accompanies mold. In the fall, mold and mildew are commonly found in damp leaf piles and compost piles. Once accessed, the spores travel into the home and flourish in dark, moist, and warm areas. This can and often does include your carpet, especially if food crumbs or particles and beverage spills have occurred. Vinegar, anti-mold agents, and a dehumidifier can help reduce mold in most rooms, but it will still continue hiding and living in your carpet fibers. Deciding to professionally clean your carpet can eliminate the mold and mildew for good. Give us a call when you’re ready for a healthier home life.
